Synovan Injections

What can you do if your dog is showing signs of osteoarthritis (OA)? With imminent cold weather it is important we, as dog owners, are keeping an eye out for any aches and pains in our furry friends. If you suspect your dog of having the below symptoms, consider booking a consult with a vet:

  • Lameness
  • Stiffness
  • Reduced interest in walks
  • Difficulty climbing the stairs
  • Loss of muscle tone in affected limb
  • Depression, irritability, or reduced sociability
  • Licking or biting at affected area

What is Synovan?

After an assessment and discussion of options, your vet may bring up the concept of Synovan injections. Synovan is a unique combination of two antiarthritic agents called PPS (Pentason Polysulphate) and NAG (N-Acetyl Glucosamine). These agents stimulate the building blocks of cartilage to repair and build joints as well as alleviating painful symptoms of arthritis.

How does Synovan help my pet?

Synovan provides this fast, double-action joint repair over a course of 4 simple injections, each given a week apart. The first will be in consultation with one of our vets, the second and third with one of our nurses, and the last with the same vet who saw your pet at the beginning of the course. This ensures consistent feedback can be relayed on the improvement in your pet, and enables us to provide ongoing care for your pet.

OA is a life-long condition that has the potential to get worse over time. As a modern treatment option, Synovan injections aim to repair and rebuild the joint, as well as actively maintaining joint health and relieving pain. Accumulatively, this all works towards creating a happier, more mobile dog

What are alternative uses for Synovan?

Synovan injections, while more commonly used for OA, are also recommended for post-surgical recovery. Particularly with orthopedic surgeries such as repair of torn cruciate ligament (TPLO), luxating patella (MPL), and joint fracture repair.

Did you know Synovan can also be used in cats?

Synovan can be used in cats who are experiencing arthritis in their old age. It is a valuable tool for veterinarians in both dogs and cats!

As always, if you are concerned for your beloved pet over winter and beyond, please give reception a call. We would be delighted to book you in for a consultation with a vet.
